Appearance: Here. Personality: During her time on Supernatural Claire grows up into a young woman and her personality changes along with that. When we first meet Claire she is only a child, a little girl who has been taught by her loving parents to be a devout Christian like they are and have faith in God and his plan.
But after the angel Castiel interferes with her life, first taking her father Jimmy from her for a year and then when he has just come back to her and her mother Amelia taking him once more, this time forever, this changes drastically. Claire ends up in foster care after her grandmother dies, having been left with her when Amelia leaves in search of her husband, and the system is not kind to her. She becomes angry and jaded in a way that no girl her age should be, disappointed by life and left behind by the family she loved, and tends to lash out, to hide her own pain and vulnerability behind a mask of indifference and biting jokes. Quick to curse and be unnecessarily mean towards others, she builds a wall between herself and the world around her, unwilling to let anyone penetrate it, too afraid that she will end up broken-hearted again should she allow herself to get attached to anyone.
This part of who she is and how she acts is in stark contrast to how caring and protective Claire is. Her occupation as a hunter is born out of a need to help others and save people from suffering a fate like her own at the hands of supernatural creatures. After she goes to live with Jody Mills, who becomes her adoptive mother, Claire has a hard time adjusting to a normal life, so instead of going to community college the way Jody wanted her to, Claire starts going on hunts by herself. While she doesn't want to worry the people she cares about and pretends that everything is fine, her desire to help other people and become a hunter is stronger. This also shows how stubborn and reckless she can be, putting other people's needs above her own.
One probably wouldn't expect a girl who has lost her parents to forgive and even befriend the being who caused this, but that is exactly what eventually happens with Claire and Castiel – as well as Dean Winchester who similarly killed Randy, a man who gave Claire a home in exchange for her stealing for him. When she meets him again, Castiel is trying to act as a father figure to her which she initially rejects completely. She notices however that the angel has changed in the years since they saw each other and sees that he genuinely wants to help her, eventually helping her find her mother (alongside the Winchesters) even if they ultimately can not save her despite their best efforts. It may be hard for her initially to look at Cas' face since it his her father's she reaches the realization that they are not the same but that Cas truly cares about her as a person and wants her to be happy and safe. She also grows to trust Sam and Dean Winchester who come to Claire's help when she needs them several times and they also entrust her to their friend sheriff Jody Mills' care after she loses her mother and she has nowhere to go to. In Jody and her other adopted daughter Alex Claire finds a new family. Since Claire doesn't typically hug people, it is a clear sign of trust, affection, and forgiveness when she does eventually hug Castiel, Sam, and Dean. Claire can generally be quite cagey when it comes to talking about her feelings, but after she is briefly turned into a werewolf and almost dies, Claire gives Jody a phone call and tells her she is her mom in the resulting voicemail she leaves.
What did they do to end up here?: While Claire is not a bad person, she has taken some actions in her time that are at least questionable. She does fight to protect people generally, but when she first started hunting she would mistake normal humans in Sioux Falls for supernatural beings and assault them, which she was arrested for. Through her connection to her adoptive mother Jody Mills, who is a sheriff, Claire avoids actually being charged but that doesn't change the fact that she has committed a crime in several instances.
Claire has a number of kills under her belt, starting with the Grigori – a rogue angel – who held her mother captive. Through the years she becomes a capable hunter who can kill her marks efficiently. This doesn't cause her any guilt since she hunts to save innocent people. She is however also aware that there are creatures who lead normal lives untainted by violence, such as the Winchesters' friend and fellow hunter Garth, who is a werewolf but doesn't hurt humans.
Because of her work as a hunter, Claire also regularly impersonates FBI agents and similar professionals to gain access to crime scenes and investigate suspicious murders and kidnappings she assumes are related to the supernatural. It may be necessary but that doesn't make it less of a crime. She also once tried to rob a supermarket which may have led to her hurting innocent civilians, had Castiel not stopped her from doing so. This she only did because of her misplaced loyalty to Randy, a man who took care of her and gave her a place to stay along with people she could view as a family after Jimmy and Amelia were gone, but only in exchange for her stealing money for him.
Powers / Abilities: Claire doesn't have any supernatural abilities at present. She was bitten by a werewolf and briefly transformed into one before she was successfully cured, so she retains none of those abilities.
There is however a sliver of the angel Castiel's grace left within her from when he possessed her shortly when she was a child. While this is not explicitly mentioned on screen, it can be infered since an angel named Gadreel possesses Sam Winchester for a period of time and leaves a part of his grace behind inside of Sam's body as well.
Claire has other, non-supernatural abilities and skills. Among those are:
- a certain proficiency in hand-to-hand combat, fighting with her angel sword and using a gun
- occult knowledge obtained studying lore and hunting supernatural beings
- basic medical knowledge (sutures, caring for injuries etc), a lot of it shared by her adoptive sister Alex who is a nurse
- research (online & using books)
- impersonating FBI agents and other people in positions of authority, making fake IDs etc to do so
